'Summer Tangle' watercolor

‘Summer Tangle’ watercolor by Sharon Himes

Born in Washington DC, Sharon Himes lives on the Eastern Shore of Maryland where she pursues her interests into art, nature and history.  She traveled extensively as a child and for three years lived near Anchorage, Alaska, spending summers exploring the nearby forests.  After high school near Baltimore, she attended Fairmont State College in Fairmont, WV where she majored in Speech and Drama and minored in art.

Sharon Himes has a special interest nature and the flora and fauna of eastern woodlands.  An amateur naturalist, much of her art reflects observation of flora and fauna in the Pocomoke Forest near her Snow Hill home.  Her paintings of wildflowers, shy birds, colorful mushrooms and other treasures tell the stories of the woodlands.

Himes has been exploring with an artist’s eye for over 30 years, collecting natural materials in season and usually painting them from life.  The birds, small animals or butterflies who visit her studio often become subjects for paintings.

Her interest in the natural subjects often leads to research into their place in the ecosystem.  She follows her curiosity with a microscope, research and observation to learn about whatever captures her interest.

The woodland watercolors of Sharon Himes are in public and private collections and have appeared in magazine articles and several books. .  Original art, gicleé reproductions and greeting cards are available online.   Her paintings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions and she is represented by several area galleries including Bishop’s Stock Gallery in Snow Hill.

Her work has been featured in American Artist magazine and is widely collected in the region. The book, Watercolor Artists Flower Handbook (Quarto 2006) by Patricia Seligman includes demonstrations and practical advice by thirteen leading floral artists including the chapter: ‘Experiencing nature through sketching’ by Sharon Himes showing her unique approach to painting wildflowers.

Her web site SharonHimes.com includes a gallery of recent paintings and links to available reproductions and other information.
